    Hi All,

we looking at deploying forefront & have some questions if i may:

    1) recommended collection/reporting db size for upto 3000 clients plus which version of sql server to use

    2) does the client install & definition updates require admin rights to install when delivered via windows update/wsus?

I would appreciate some guidance on the above.

    Thanks

    Kass

  • Hello Kass,

    1)  Here are some links that can help with SQL sizing:

    Planning database sizes : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb418916.aspx

    Database sizing : http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=89813

    Choosing your topology: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb418915.aspx

Tuning Client Security database components: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb418780.aspx

    From the last link:

Client Security supports SQL Server Standard Edition for up to 3,000 managed computers. To manage more than 3,000 client computers, Client Security requires the partitioning capabilities of Enterprise Edition.

So you are right on the edge between the two.  As mentioned in the tuning topic, the major consideration between two editions is the size of the database.  So when you read the database sizes section and make decisions around retention period and scan frequency, you should get an idea where your enviroment would fall.  There is a chart in the Database Sizing link which might help here also.

    2)  No, in fact a user does not even need to be logged on.  You can control the behavior of how the client installation behaves via the Automatic Updates policy settings.

    Hope this helps,

    Craig
