Network and Sharing center crashes RRS feed

  • Question

  • Any time I open the "Network and Sharing Center" in Vista it crashes.  An Explorer window opens at "Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center" but the interior of the window is just all blank (white).  Then, I get an error dialog box stating:

    Microsoft Windows

    Windows Explorer has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

    With the following buttons:
    [Debug] [Close program]

Has anyone else seen this or can anyone suggest how I might fix this issue?  Thanks.

  • I had this problem - Network and Sharing Center window flashes open but closes immediately. No error message and nothing interesting in the event log.

I solved the issue when I tracked down Network and Sharing Center to a file named netcenter.dll located in the System32 folder. This file was zero bytes in size. Must have been a failed update at some point, I assume. There was another copy of the file, also zero bytes in the folder C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-networkcenter_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_3362bbb2dbe6316b

I located the file on another copy of Vista and copied it over to a temp folder. I had to boot to safe mode to copy the file to the proper locations. It was necessary to reset permissions on these files in order to delete the zero-byte copies. I manually reset permissions back the way they were (TrustedInstaller has full control, all others have read and execute only).

This fixed the problem. If you see a zero byte file, this may be the fix for you. Hope this helps!

  • I have the same problem as you had Phil with the window opening and then closing immediately. I looked up the netcenter.dll file and it was 2.30MB, unlike yours which was zero bytes. I have not been able to find another answer to this problem. If you hear anything else that may help, drop me an email. Thanks.

  • I am suffering the same now... Can't put my finger on what has changed recently (lots after rebuilding the PVR for QAM). Regardless of how I try to access Network and Sharing center, it results in Windows Explorer crashing and the whole desktop resets.

Find this in Windows Application event log:
