Serial backups using hardware provider RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to run serial backups of CSV's when using the hardware provider. We have 10 node cluster with 11 LUNs. I would like to run the backups one after another rather than 10 at a time?

    Cheers

  • In the same URL above you have instructions to serilize at a CSV level. The script would generate a datasourcegroups.xml file and the file will contain as many groups as there are CSVs. Once that file is created you can modify the xml file to have all the VMs in one group to serialize all the VM backups.

    You can also modify the dsconfig.ps1 file to acheive the same result.

    Here is an example of what your datasourcegroups.xml file would look like if you want to serialize:

    Please note that <Datasource /> is just a placeholder this will contain the actual VM datasources and not as is.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>
    <DatasourceGroup xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/dls/GroupDatasourceByDisk.xsd">
    <Group GroupName="Group1">
    <Datasource  />

    <Datasource  />

    <Datasource  />

    <Datasource  />

    </Group>
    </DatasourceGroup>

  • Yes you can still do backup serialization with H/W provider. Just set the reg key documented for "Enabling Per node serialization" below technet article to "1". This will ensure that no more than 1 backup runs on any node.

    Also why do you want to serialize the backups?

  • Hey Shyama,

    The problem we are having is that with 10 node and 10 CSV's everyone one of LUN's is getting hit at the same time. All of a sudden all 10 LUN in are redirected access mode (for the time it take to create the snapshot) and the latency being created by so much redirect IO is crashing some of the servers, in particular the win2003 ones, with KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR. What I would really like is just one server (in the whole cluster) to backup at anyone time
