Optical drives not functioning RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows 8 64 bit pre-release version: device manager sees optical drives but they do not function. Inserting any kind of CD or DVD media yields no response. Reboot: same. This is on a machine with several different OSes, mostly Microsoft, and the drives function normally. I have several machines, none older than core 2 duo/quad, on which Win 8 will not even install. If someone has an answer I would be grateful but so far everything about Win 8 fills me with wonder: I get the branching to ARM and the desire to "unify" the interface but the two headed beast that is Windows 8, sadly, evokes the response most people would have seeing unfortunate Siamese twins joined at the head. An ARM emulator running on the desktop for those who want Metro/whatever would have been a better solution.

  • If you use an IDE drive, configure it as Master or ran this command:

    reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
