Project 2010 files saved in 2007 format will not open in Project 2007 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Project 2010 on my personal laptop and am running project 2007 SP3 on my work desktop. When I save a project 2010 file in a 2007 format, I am unable to open it with project 2007. I receive a message that says:

"This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft office Project and a converter is needed to open it. Do you want to download the converter from the Microsfot office Web site?" With a Yes or No option.

Clicking Yes takes you to a link that I can't paste here on office.microsoft.com which doesn't help.

How do I open a file with project 2007 that was saved in a 2007 format from project 2010? We're talking about a 650 line project plan that I really don't want to retype.

    Thanks.

You say you have SP3 installed for Project 2007 and that's good, required in fact for what you want to do. However, do you have SP2 installed for Project 2010. If not you need to install that (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/ee748587). If you already do have SP2 installed, then it should work without any problems so there might be a problem with the file itself. Try creating a new test file in Project 2010 and save in Project 2007 format. Does that work? If the test file works okay, then the Project 2010 file may have some corruption. Try saving to XML and then re-open in Project 2010. Now save that in Project 2007 format.

  • Hi:

Looks like the Project 2007 file is corrupted. You need to have Project 2010 SP1 to be installed, and has been mentioned in the release notes of SP1. Save the file again in Project 2007 and try.

  • Thanks John. Saving to XML then importing and resaving to 2007 fixed the issue. Thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated!
