Browser won't open an auto cad drawing file from sharepoint 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • In my company I uploaded CAD dwg files to a web site in SharePoint 2010 to make them accessible as read-only in the field for reference. In data sheet view the icons show up correctly on my computer but when I click on the link for the dwg file SharePoint opens a blank browser window on my computer. Some computers in the office will open and display the drawings correctly. It is the same with the Adobe pdf drawing files, so I suspect it is a browser setting issue but I am unable to locate the setting. I am using Microsoft Windows 7 Professional and Internet Explorer 9. Can anyone offer a solution?

  • Hi.

This sounds familiar, try to set the Central Administration/your web application/general setting to 'browser file handling' = permissive.

And you can check this thread: http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/27312/opening-autocad-dwg-files-from-sharepoint-2010
    and perhaps this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ar/sharepointgeneral/thread/0fdab953-b86c-4545-93d9-a666821eb891

Thank you for your reply. I have turned these proposals over to our Sharepoint IT staff and they are working through the hierarchy for approval to try and fix the problem. Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you, but I am still waiting here for the mountain to move. :)

I will get back to this thread as soon as I can get something done and give more feedback.

    Again, Thanks for your interest.

  • Don't set permissive mode.  It reduces the security of the entire Web App and clients.  Instead, add the MIME type of the AutoCAD file to the AllowedInlineDownloadedMimeTypes attribute.

  • I'd be interested to see if you can open DWG files from websites OUTSIDE of SharePoint, i.e. in the wild.

The problem with the AutoDesk handler is a known issue for many years.  Sometimes it works, nobody is really sure why, the rest of the time the workaround is to right-click and save as...

  • Try to unregister the following DLL : regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files (x86)\DWG TrueView 2013\acctrl.dll"  if you are using DWG True View 2013.  (only if you have a x64 client)

CMD must be runned as Administrator. This will deal with the blank page issue.

  • You can check protocol handler and ifilter or create one. By default Sharepoint doesn't know how to deal with new file formats

  • Do you have an updated link?  This one no longer works.  I would appreciate it!
