result of virus - select the encoding that makes your document readable

Last week my computer got infected with a virus that was so bad that I had to purchase a new computer. After transferring all of my Word docs from the infected computer I find that they won't open but rather prompt me for a file conversion with the message "select the encoding that makes your document readable". If I check the file properties I find that all of my docs have an accessed date stamp from the time of the infection. Is there any way to recover these docs or are they history?

For the error message, here is a KB for your reference, it states when you try to open a Microsoft Office Word 2007 document that has an attached template in Microsoft Office Word 2003 or in earlier versions of Word, the File Conversion dialog box appears. You are prompted to select the encoding that makes your document readable.
