Create Database or Alter Database failed - 4096 MB limit RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have received the following error in my SQL ERRORLOG file. It indicates that my database limit of 4096 MB per database has been reached.  Can you verify for me if the database limitation is 4 GB or 10 GB? Thanks

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP@) - 10.0.4000.0 (Intel X86)

NO, SQL Server 2008 has limitation of 4 G data file NOT 10 G. The 10G limitation started from SQL Server 2008 r2 onward.

The limitation of 4 G is ONLY for data file the log file can have size greater than 4 G

  • SQL Server Express 2008 will accommodate a Database up to 10Gb in size and other versions considerably larger.

It may be that in the Database Properties the file sizes have been capped so therefore they cannot be expanded beyond 4096Mb, if this is the case then increase the allowed maximum sizes of the Database files.

You may also be getting this message as there is insufficient disk space to create a data file of 4096Mb; try reducing the File sizes; or choose different volumes, and try again.

  • Express edition supports till 10 Gb data.

Anyway, I think you don't have Express Edition. Unless I am wrong if you were Express Edition you would see something like that:

    Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - 12.0.4100.1 (X64)   Apr 20 2015 17:29:27   Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation  Express Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.3 <X64> (Build 9600: ) (Hypervisor)
