Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service documentation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been doing a series of scalability tests on some SharePoint server farms... in my report I've included some notes that in my testing, the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service is started in Central Admin > System Settings > Manage Services on Server. I want to try to be more specific on this service and explain what it does and why I've been using it (I won't go into the details of how my solutions are deployed and how my services are created, but it seems this service seems necessary for things to deploy properly), but I've only found vague blog posts about how app servers should/should not have this service running, etc.

Is anyone aware of some specific documentation regarding this service? This is Sharepoint 2010 by the way.

    Thanks in advance.

  • You are correct, it can be difficult to get detailed information on how some of these services operate.  However, here are 2 links that may shed some light on the Workflow Timer Service for you.

Workflow Scalability and Performance in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd441390(v=office.12).aspx

Estimate performance and capacity planning for workflow in SharePoint Server 2010: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg508755.aspx

While the first link is for WSS 3.0, it may help to provide some insight into how the service works.  The second link may not be as detailed, but does have some good insights.

    Hope those help.

  • Thanks for the input. Do you know if specific documentation exists for these services though?
