Can sharepoint be installed on a laptop? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I want to learn sharepoint. Can it be installed on a single laptop? If yes, what are the hardware requirements for the laptop?

If it can't be installed on a laptop is there anywhere online where I can learn and practice?

    Thanks

  • There is a trial version of SharePoint that you can install, just like SQL server. Try these two sites, though they have the same version, just different pieces of information that you should find helpful:

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=16631

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee388573

If you are on a budget, try the online tutorials, TechNet, blogs, etc. first. Then see if there are resources that are available for the areas you want to focus upon. If there aren't then you have a good idea to see if there are any courses, books, etc. that you can purchase.

If you have one locally, try your local user group. There you can find a lot of great information, peers, etc. for community resources. You will find that you can get more than enough information to get you well on your way.

  • Indeed it can, I would look at this document for guidance.

Some people prefer to build a virtual machine (VM) with a true server OS, though that is a preference.

  • Thanks I don't think I need VM as it's solely for learning purposes. Is there a free installation for sharepoint like there is for sql server?

What else do I need to install on the laptop (that i will buy any suggestions appreciated -budget $600) to start learning SharePoint?

Should I attend a course or are the online courses and tutorials enough?

My purpose for studying SharePoint is so that I can apply also to jobs that require knowledge of Sharepoint.

    Thanks
