The future of Traditional development (WSP solutions : farm and sandbox) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone,

I'm currently working on a migration from SharePoint 2013 to 2016 and eventually to Office 365. We have a LOT of wsp packages installed (most of them are full trust farm solutions). We would like to know if Microsoft will one day (soon or not) deprecate the support of wsp solutions for OnPrem farms and sandbox solutions for Online Tenant ?

This is very important to us as we are wondering if we have to rethink and redesign our solutions using the new development models and patterns.

Is there an official Microsoft Roadmap giving more details about this ?

  • First, Sandbox solutions that contain code have already been deactivated in SharePoint Online.  They aren't just deprecated, they are already disabled.  You can still use Sandbox solutions for declarative XML content, but not for DLLs.

There are no published plans to deprecate the use of WSP (Farm Solutions) in on-premises environments, but they are not and never will be available in Office 365. So although you can continue to use them in your On-premises environment, if your eventual goal is to move to Online then you should start planning to rewrite all your WSPs to use some form of Client Side code, either Add-ins or SharePoint Framework.
