  • Don’t worry, it is not a known issue.

Try to clean boot and temporarily disable McAfee software, then change default app again.

If McAfee can’t provide a solution, update system to the newer build, kb4505056(17763.504) has replaced kb4494441(17763.503), after update, issue might be resolved.

  • thanks for that i have now found the cause of the issue, windows 10 1809 changes the way it creates a user profile and the the default browser behaviour

windows now creates C:\USERS\*\APPDATA\LOCAL\MICROSOFT\WINDOWSAPPS\MICROSOFTEDGE.EXE a 0 byte file in this and a sub folder. i have mcafee access protection enabled and i have rules preventing .exe and other files being created in the appsdata directory

i have gone back to a windows 10 1709 build and windows does not create these files so users can change the default browser

  • Okay, maybe for current security requirement, your behavior(roll back) is the only feasible way, good decision.

To my knowledge, Windows 10 1903 is releasing now, you could find a test machine and upgrade to this version, test again.
