Outlook 2013 deleted messages show in Gmail inbox. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using GMail with Outlook 2013, configured as IMAP. When I select and delete multiple messages from Outlook, they are removed from the inbox and are moved to Trash. After, I do "Empty Folder" on the Gmail\Trash folder and switch folders multiple times, GMail (web interface) still shows some of those deleted messages in the GMail inbox.

    My settings are:
    GMail: Auto-Expunge on.
    <br>
    Outlook: Default IMAP settings (I have not modified adjusted any settings).

    The goal is to have the Inbox in Outlook and the GMail Inbox be consistent and in-sync. Considering the purpose of IMAP, this should be the default behavior.

    What is going on? Any help would be appreciated.

  • I've found it takes a few send and receives to update Gmail after deleting or moving mail in Outlook 2013. The product team is aware of the slowness. I'm not sure if its outlook or gmail at fault - other imap servers are faster so it's not a problem with the imap implementation in general.

    Verify your settings - File, Account settings, double click on the account then More Settings. Check the purge settings at the bottom of the Advanced tab.

  • Diane,

    Thank you for your input. Would you say what should those purge settings be?

    Also, when I change the purge settings (Check the "Mark items for deletion") and restart outlook, it reverts back to being unchecked. Does this setting depend on some IMAP server setting that is re-negotiated at outlook start-up?

    Thanks,

    Umair.

  • This behavior is expected if you are using IMAP account. Follow the instructions in the below link for more information on purging emails in outlook. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP100804201033.aspx?pid=CH100622151033

    - Tried but the option would not be reverted. Try to create a new profile to test further.
