Unable to pin a specific exe to taskbar in Windows 7 or Windows 8 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have two .exe files in our application that are pinned to the Start (Win 8) and Taskbar (Win 7/8), yet one of them will not pin to taskbar.  Occasionally it seems to 'randomly pin on install', but we are unable to duplicate how to get it to work as it's completely random and more often than not does not work.  After countless hours of trying to find a solution for this and testing every possible scenario (creating test installers through Installaware, using exes with other names, etc), it seems that this problem seems may be related directly to the o/s.

If you  copy our exes files to a Windows 7 or Windows 8 folder (desktop, local drive, etc.) without installing, the pinning options will display as follows when you right-click on the shortcuts.

esilaw.exe - Pin to Start, no Pin to Taskbar option

esim2101.exe - Pin to Start, Pin to Taskbar

If we simply rename the esilaw.exe file to any other name it works fine and the Pin to Taskbar option is available.  Name it back to esilaw.exe and the option disappears.  It's not part of the restricted list in the registry for naming.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why we cannot get esilaw.exe to pin to taskbar.  Does anyone have any ideas why esilaw.exe won't pin?
