DPM Datacentre rebuilt scenario RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all.

We currently have a DPM 2012 server protecting VMs on the VM level.

We do not have a DR site and the entire environment is located in a single site. However, DPM's tape backup are being sent out to a remote location.

In the event of datacenter disaster, what is the fastest way to rebuilt the environment from the tapes?

My specific concern is with DPM requirement to have an active AD to function, but the AD backup is still in the tapes waiting for DPM to restore it (Chicken and egg scenario...). Would prefer not to rely on another backup solution to backup and restore the AD before getting DPM operational.

  • Hi Viktor,

Here is one possible solution for your disaster-recovery plan

    1. Obtain new hardware, you will need minimum two servers for the restore.

    2. Install a new domain controller, use a different name then your production environment.

    3. Install a new DPM-server in your new domain. (DPM 2012 R2 – QuickStart Deployment Guide)

    4. Attach a tape-library to your DPM-server and import your tapes.

    5. In the DPM console click Management -> Libraries. Select the tape to import and click Recatalog imported tape.

    6. Start to restore your environment from the imported tapes.

I hope this will help you in the work of creating your disaster-recovery plan.

    Kind Regards
    Markus Eliasson
