  • vhdx boot Server 2016 Preview via Server 2012r2 and install Azure Stack, is that possible, without destroying my Hyper-V machine. :-)

  • Yes. I have a system configured to boot Windows Server 2016 TP4 from a VHDX. Another boot option boots 2012 R2 from VHDX. The system was initially installed with Windows 10 to the physical drive.  You just need to use bcdedit to add a new entry to your bcd data.

    Of course, when each operating system comes up, it thinks it owns all the resources, so you have to be careful to ensure that one instance of the OS does not clobber something another instance needs.  It is best to keep critical data on separate volumes and maybe even keep those offline except on the system that needs them.
