Server 2016 WSUS Client reporting as Server 2008 & "Not yet reported" RRS feed

  • Question

  • We recently added a new DC to our environment running Server 2016. In the WSUS console, it shows as running a 2008 Standard server and not yet reported. On the 2016 server, it says "Install updates automatically using a managed updating service."  Checking for updates returns this error: 0x8024401c

When I run the built-in troubleshooter, I get notified of errors, choose to fix them and the result is this:

Potential Windows Update Database error detected    Not fixed
Possible issues may prevent Windows Update from keeping your system up to date. Not Fixed

    No further information is provided.

I have seen similar questions with the answer being "install KB3159706" and that fixes some people's issues, but not mine. It's already installed on the WSUS server, which is running Server 2012 R2.

I saw responses that another update (KB3216755) might fix it but it's only available in the Microsoft catalog and only for Windows 10.

Any suggestions that don't include the above mentioned update would be much appreciated. Thank you

Is your WSUS installed on W2012R2 or lower? If yes, did you install
KB3095113 + KB3159706 on the WSUS? If not, pls do so. But, in
KB3159706 you have to do after install manual steps!

    In a admin Commandline:

    net stop wuauserv
    rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
    net start wuauserv
    wuauclt /resetauthorization (wait 5 Minutes)
    wuauclt /detectnow (wait 5 Minutes)
    wuauclt /reportnow (wait 5 Minutes)

How many entrys you have in Registry for your WSUS? Since January 2017
    there a 3!

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
    UpdateServiceUrlAlternate = http://YourWSUS:8530

    Which Build your WSUS have?

  • Hi,

    >>I have seen similar questions with the answer being "install KB3159706" and that fixes some people's issues, but not mine.

As you mentioned that 2016 server was "discovered" as 2008 server .

Based on my experience , if you haven't update WSUS server to latest build number , the wrong discovery may happen .

Actually , KB3095113 is the hotfix for that issue:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3095113/update-to-enable-wsus-support-for-windows-10-feature-upgrades

    Best Regards,

    Elton

  • I am having the same issue and tried several thing to try and get my 2016 servers to report in and get updates from my 2012R2 WSUS server. I think there is something bigger going on with WSUS and 2016 compatibility.

Here's the link to my thread. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b518b515-6b70-484b-a6a8-5e58aa8a5379/cant-connect-to-wsus?forum=winserverwsus

  • Also, I have also tried to install KB3095113, but the WSUS server says that is not needed and exits the install.

  • "Is your WSUS installed on W2012R2 or lower?"
    WSUS Server OS 2012R2

    KB3095113 + KB3159706 on the WSUS?

Both updates have been installed. Note, WSUS will not run if you don't run the post install steps after KB3159706. There have been other updates that broke WSUS and running those post-install steps gets it working again.

    WSUS Build: 9600

I have 4 WU registry entries on the 2016 server:

    TargetGroup
    TargetGroupEnabled
    WUServer
    WUStatusServer

Now the 2016 server is reporting as "Windows (version 10)" after I ran these commands:

    net stop wuauserv

    rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
    net start wuauserv
    wuauclt /resetauthorization (wait 5 Minutes)
    wuauclt /detectnow (wait 5 Minutes)
    wuauclt /reportnow (wait 5 Minutes)

  • I got mine working after running these commands:

    In a admin Commandline:

net stop wuauserv rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution net start wuauserv wuauclt /resetauthorization (wait 5 Minutes) wuauclt /detectnow (wait 5 Minutes) wuauclt /reportnow (wait 5 Minutes)

    *******************

It seems WSUS on 2012 is really kinda fiddly.

I didn't have nearly this many problems running it on Server 2003.

    It just worked.

This is not the correct build. Here you find where is the Build:
    http://www.wsus.de/images/wsus-version.png

I have 4 WU registry entries on the 2016 server:TargetGroup
    TargetGroupEnabled
    WUServer
    WUStatusServer

Since January exist a third entry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
    UpdateServiceUrlAlternate
http://YourWSUS:8530 You find this in GPOs too.

Now the 2016 server is reporting as "Windows (version 10)" after I ran these commands:
    net stop wuauserv

    rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
    net start wuauserv
    wuauclt /resetauthorization (wait 5 Minutes)
    wuauclt /detectnow (wait 5 Minutes)
    wuauclt /reportnow (wait 5 Minutes)

OK, and if you want to see Windows Server 2016 or Windows 10 Pro or
Enterprise, you can run hourly this Script:

  • THANK YOU so much for this hint!!!!!!!!!!

    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
    UpdateServiceUrlAlternate .... "

I could not bring my Windows Server 2016 clients to connect to my Windows Server 2012 R2 WSUS. I tried everything and went through so many Technet articles. After setting the registry entry on all my servers and resetting authorization with WSUS, it works perfectly now for every server.

    Brilliant!!!! :)
