Front-end SQL express SPs RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was wondering if anyone does patching for the SQL express. I did some searching and haven't found much talk about keeping the SQL Express up to date.

I see in Lync to Skype inplace migration they need to be. But nothing about typical maintenance.

    Is it worth it?

    thanks,

    Brett

  • Hi Brett,

Based on my research, In addition to upgrade Lync to skype for business, you need not patching for the SQL express up to date for Lync (just Updating SQL 2012 Express to SP1 on Lync 2013 Servers)

    https://www.shudnow.net/2013/06/04/updating-sql-2012-express-to-sp1-on-lync-2013-servers/

if you have some concern about the SQL server ,you also could open a thread in the SQL  server forum

  • My question is more around the updating of SQL Express. I know that when running the Skype for Business server updater it doesn't patch sql express. Does there need to be a manual update for sql express on the frontend servers?

    thanks,
    Brett

  • In the KHI document it talks about applying patches to the sql servers including frontends.

    Summary

After you’ve completed your analysis, if there’s a need to remediate, consider the following. The majority of these issues can be solved by:

    • Ensuring operational processes are in-place to regularly maintain all hardware/software components (in no particular order):
      • Windows Servers Operating System is up-to-date with Windows Update patches.
      • Lync Server/Skype4B specific cumulative updates are up-to-date.
      • Patch SQL Server instances (including Front-end Servers).
      • BIOS, Firmware, Drivers (RAID, NIC specifically) are up-to-date.

My question is how do the front-ends get the latest CU for SQL express. Its not in the Skype server Updater, I know cause I can look at the version of the SQL Express and its not been update. the Tables yes, but not the engine.
