  • Question

  •

So I get a new PC...guy at the shop asks if I want Vista or XP.  I'd heard about some problems with Vista but I'd heard the same thing about XP years ago and didn't have nothing major so I got the Vista Home Premium Edition.

Anyway, bring new PC home, end up downloading some new software and picking up a new printer/scanner.  No big deal I expected that. Get everything hooked up working, situated and go to update vista.  No go.  nadda.  Freezes up around 75-90% on installation and I get the "Windows Module Installer Has Stopped Working" error and need to manually shut down live update. A few  Windows Defender updates have installed successfully.  I've tried downloading directly, bypassing Live Update but run into the same install problems.

My wife needs MS Office Home and Student for school.  Pay $150, download PC crashes during install.  Tray to reinstall, re-download, error.  She picks up a retail copy.  I get "Windows Office Has Encountered an Error"

Drudging through these forums it seems I am not the only one wit these problems.  The shop I purchased the pc from said I need to wait for SP1.  Not sure how I am even going to install it but...and what about the mean time?  Last I'd seen SP1 wasn't going to be made available to the public until March?  How did this OS make it onto my PC? Others I've talked to haven't had near these problems but from what I can see others are having problems though.  None of the threads I've read indicate any solutions.

I'm not a "computer guy" but I'm not an idiot either.  I can't understand why Vista is having such a problem updating itself and installing MS products.

  • Sorry but I've been trying to straighten this out.  I've been working with MS and suffice to say I think all the obvious avenues have been tried.  I've ran live update in Clean Boot, and same problem.

I tried to run the System File Checker and get a message saying it cannot perform the requested task.  I tried to upgrade using my Vista Home Premium DVD. That ran for a bit then shut down.

<:AtomicElement>I've tried running each update individually, running them from MS update, saving them, running as admin etc. etc. etc. I'm getting nowhere.

    <:AtomicElement>

<:AtomicElement>In a last ditch effort last night I completely re-formatted and ran a clean install.  Well, I got MS Office to install but still am having the same (if not worse) problems with Windows update.  Everything downloads fine then fails somewhere between 75-90%

    <:AtomicElement>

<:AtomicElement>After re-installing and trying to update a couple of times I've got 88 of these that are all pretty much the same...

  • I hope your experience with Microsoft Support is going well.  This one is a bit more difficult to troubleshoot, but it's software and just code, so a solution is out there.  In order to investigate, I would need to see the windowsupdate.log and possibly other data as well.

  • I haven't heard anything from support since the Vista upgrade failed.   When I reinstalled at first I was getting update failures at the end of install.  Occassionally one or two would go trough, usually a Windows Defender update.  Rather than post the entire log here's the update that failed this morining.  At 43% install I received the "Windows Module Installer has stopped working and was shut down error" then had to manually stop update.  The Windows Module Installer failure is becoming more and more common.

We've tried wiping Windows Update to clear the cache but that didin't seem to have any effect.  Tried installing Windows Update Agent but that fails as well.  Next step will be to try a reinstall using a different dvd later this weekend.

Here's the windows update log from a few minutes ago (sorry if it's long I'm cutting it in two parts):

  • Can you post the APPCRASH events for Windows Installer instead of the WINDOWS_WCP_OTHER_FAILURE2's?

The failures basically say the same thing as the log,

Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070002 means the file was not found.

So it sounds like to me that download directory is deleted by the WIndows Update Database doesn't know it.  I'd be curious to know the exact steps that have been done.

Where do I find the appcrash events? (Damnit Jim I'm a Chef not a computer expert)

As far as exact...it's hard to remember what's been tried when.  I've been trying to straighten this out for over 3 weeks.

Before the re-install I was working w/ MS.

First tried configure IP address automatically..already was. Sent the windows update log file. Then tried clean boot, no change.Tried  System File Checker stopped with message "Resource protection could not perfor the requested operation".  Last communication with them was last Saturday. Tried to Run Upgrade using DVD got a "Windows cannot copy files for installation" error.

This is where it gets less clear.  Got ahold of my brother who just finished installing Vista at his home and many work pcs.(he's in IT) and seemed to love it.  He hooks up remotely tries all the above suggestions along with a few more.  After about 4hrs he gives up and asks if I have a problem w/ a rebuild.  I say no, as I've been afraid to put or do anything on it . So I wipe the hard drive and reinstall.  Seems to go without a hitch.

Before I do anything , no programs, no hardware, no drivers..anything.  I try to update. Nope.

I get back on remote w/ brother and try searching errror codes. 80070002 and 80070057 and the two that stick out. Anyway if there was a suggestion out there we've tried it.  I know I have Windows Update Agent sitting on my pc unable to install as well.

    thanks for your help.

    Hello,

Thanks for hanging in there.  I actually read this in another forum, but it's a reasonable step to take given where you are having problems.  I wish I could reproduce your problem so I would know the exact answer.

    1. Start / All Programs / Accessories / Right Click on Command Prompt

    2. Click Run as administrator

    3. Run the following command at the Command Prompt:

    regsvr32 msxml3.dll

  • Ok ran that. Seems familiar.

Update ran through (no windows installer errors) but failed on all 35 updates with codes:

    800736CC and of course 70070057 and 70070002.

Trying to run only Vista updates, no security updates...get the 0057 and 0002 codes.

Over the last week the only updates I've been able to install where KB905866-Windows Junk Email Filter, KB890830-Malicious Software Removal Tool and KB915597-Windows defender update.  Not sure what's different with these but as I recall the Windows Defender Updates are the only ones that I haven't had any trouble with.

I've tried running update via restart.  It will run through updates x of xx restart fine and when I open update it looks like they've installed with 1 or 2 optional updates left. Until I search for updates and find them all sitting there again.

  • I've actually tried to reproduce this problem to no avail.  I'd be interested in seeing if I can figure this one out remotely next week if that interests you.

  • I'm hoping for a new copy of Vista in the next couple of days.  It may be a long shot but I'm hoping this fixes the problem. I wouldn't think a flawed disc would work at all.  If this does fix my problems I'd be more than happy to send you my install dvd to play with.  It's been a little over a month and I just want to move on.

Just for kicks I installed the defender update released yesterday.  What is different about these that I am able to install?

  • I doubt that it's your install DVD unless the DVD isn't genuine.  Based on the fact that one is working and the other is not tells me there is a configuration or state problem.  I believe the new Windows Defender updates are working because you don't have any history about them.  The 0x80070057 just means invalid parameter which isn't enough information, it just tells me that it tried to run the package and got an error.  The 0x80070002 error tells me that it couldn't find a file, but I don't if it as the distribution file or some other file.  There are additional steps that can be taken to get to the root cause like increasing the level of logging of Windows Update.

I'm not a big fan of silver bullet troubleshooting becuase you lose your update history and I like to know exactly where something is going wrong, but I'm surprised that the following steps didn't make the problem go away.

Suggested as last resort...  This essentially puts windows update in a state where it starts over and only tries to instal new updates, but you lose previous history.

    1. Click Start / All Programs / Accessories / Right click on Command Prompt / Run As Administrator

    net stop WuAuServ

    ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution OldSoftwareDistribution

    net start WuAuServ

    2. Start / All Programs / Windows Update / Check for Updates / Install Updates

The above not working tells me it's more of an issue around the  trustedinstaller.exe just trying to run the package and additional detailed logging from Windows Update is necessary. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

I know it gets frustrating, because you just want to use the computer and not have to spend time fixing it.  Nevertheless, debugging computers and improving the user experience is 'my' passion.  Private e-mail me at my personal address johnbuk @ live.com if you want to continue troubleshooting.

  • Hello, I had the same problem with my new vista system.  I couldn't get updates and tried HP online chat to help.  I got limited success there.  What I did was turn off all security on my system then I tried microsoft updates or hp updates.  I think it took 2 or 3 tries before it worked.  After the downloads were finished I turned all security systems back on.  I do however have some type of a fatal error,  it seems to be more of a glitch but not sure of this.  I can now get all updates.  It's kind of like an e-mail that won't go through from you to someone else but once they send you an e-mail the path has been established and all appears to work for updates.  Now I only have to get rid of the occasional fatal shut down that I fix by using system restore to an earlier date.  The steps of the system restore is needed each time the system fails.  My system has failed to this point twice in 4 months.  Maybe this will be good enough until Micro Soft comes up with a patch or fix for this.  I trull hope that this helps all that read it.  Good Luck I hope this helps.

  • I'm not exactly sure what was resolved here but I took this machine back to the shop where I'd purchased it.

Initially thinking it was a memory problem the shop built an entirely new pc and installed vista from the disc. Same problem.  He'd also tried it on several other machines with the same result.  When he called me yesterday he said it seemed it was the OS and that he'd installed a new copy. I had tried this using a copy and my (then) current product key and hadn't had any different results so, who knows?

I bring home the new pc (looks like I got the new build not my old machine) plug in everything seems more or less fine.  Updates are installed along w/ SP1.  Office installs fine along w/ a couple of security updates but I'm having a little trouble w/ Office 2007 SP1.  Not too concerned as it's running fine.  Installed, printer and a few programs with no problems. Have had some trouble pulling large groups of files off an external HD but this worked fine pulling over smaller groups of files, some issues with Media Player but overall the system seems stable, even IE7 which was crashing regularly.

BTW...Thanks for all your help John.

  • I am getting error Code 80073715 and Code 80073712

Same issues, try to download and get the errors everytime for 2 updates, one of which I did get from the website and it said it installed but Vista still shows it available for download.

    Updates....

    KB938371

    KB938979

It will get to about 14.5 MB and 8 Percent done then drop the download to the error screen.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Yah, I may have spoken to soon.  The system was running pretty well for a couple of weeks but app crashes and blue screens became more and more of a problem. Hadn't installed any new programs/hardware aside from a recommended active x controll and near as I could tell update was working fine.  Then the updates released on 4/8......

Well, I'm pretty much right back where I started with the Windows Module installer.  Crashes and blue screens have been frequent all week.  I'm getting the same 938371 errors. I think it's a windows is busy updating error.  Did get a new "solution" today after my morning blue screen crash. (it's becoming routine)

    hmm,.....

  • I just wanted to let you know my solution to the same problem.

I also had a new laptop, Compaq Presario 714NR, came with Windows Vista Home Premium.   I’m considered by my friends to be a power user, been playing with PCs since 1978.  I’m typically a first adopter of most new technology, some times on the bleeding edge.  I also heard that there were some issues with Vista, but I figured that I could solve them.

The laptop was sluggish after installing Office 2007, so I upgraded the RAM to 2GB.  That improved performance for awhile. The first major irritation was that my trusty Palm Pilot (Tungsten C) was having difficulty in syncing with the new computer.  Palm appears to have given up on non-Smartphone handhelds, so they were of no help.  So after 10 years as a Palm power user, I bought a HP iPAQ (Classic 111).  Although I can sync the iPAQ with Vista, it is not flawless; it requires a lot of hand holding.  Recently, Vista appeared to be self-destructing.  It was constantly shutting down its own modules.  USB connections were being dropped, for no apparent reason.  Very frustrating trying to access an external hard drive (500 GB WinBook) that is there one minute and gone the next.  Requiring me to unplug and re-plug the hard drive to gain access.  For some of my legacy equipment there are no VISTA drivers and the manufactures do not appear to be in any hurry to create them.  So I am unable to use them at all.

After three months of fighting the good fight.  I determined the best solution.  I re-partitioned and re-formatted the hard drive, and installed Windows XP.   My computer works fast, no crashes, USB devices stay connected, and all of my legacy hardware works.

Based on my experiences, I will not "upgrade" to VISTA until all of these issues get resolved.   I still have a PC using VISTA in my house.  I had also bought my wife a new laptop (Dell), she doesn’t run any software beyond Office 2007, and so far it is still working.  But, if it starts acting up significantly, I’ll be upgrading her to Windows XP as well.

This is my next option.  My wife has 3 weeks of school left so I'll hold out until then. Maybe MS will have figured it out by then.  I've tried everything I can think of on my end, even tested the outlet I'm plugged into.

It all seems weird and disconected.  Windows mail just stops working after a while.  I can get it back up by restarting.  About 1/2 the time during restart it tries to install updates (from 4/8 I believe) but goes no where.  Some times I get the "Configuring updates # of #" on restart, but once again hangs out at 0%.  Most nights I see Module Installer crashes at 3am when AU starts up.

Office is hit or miss.  IE Continues to shut down regularly.  My 180g external hard drive works in one USB port, when I plug into the other (right next to it) windows gets stuck in a loop looking for drivers.

A few days ago I got about a dozen "WMI Service Has Stopped" errors one after another.  I was playing solitaire.

  • I have noticed the same... Websites just stop responding, or just lockup when trying to load the next click... shows they are loading.. I close the window and start over it works fine.   Vista hates Acrobat reader or vise versa.......

    Updates won't install properly.....

Windows Mail is now asking me for my username and password for my verizon mail nearly everytime I check it, even though I tell it to save.

  • Can't install SP1. Fails to download.

Fixed a 800B0100 error by using cbscheckstore.exe and replacing a 0 byte security catalog.

    But now I get 80073712.

Tried a lot of stuff, nothing works.

Here's the problem report from the clip board.

    Any sugesstions?
