Where is Easy Transfer? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In  the first wizard the easy transfer option for Windows 7 seems to be missing:

In Windows 7 under "What to know" there is no option for easy transfer

Whereas in Windows Vista "Transfer files and settings" is present.

  • MS probably wanted you to transfer everything after the install and not during if they removed the easy transfer link, that would be my guess.

  • I suppose that makes sense if I was MS but I would think you would want to back up your data and setings prior to a custom install that wipes the partition or from XP so you can restore it after. Back up data before - restore data after. That's the whole idea behind backing up data and Easy Transfer. I think somebody forgot something, accidentally omitted or left the option off the wizard. Very strange.

  • Hi

It's recommended that you use WET prior to performing a Custom install.

You need to download the Windows 7 version of Windows Easy Transfer.

See Step 2 in either one of the following articles for the step by step instructions.

Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7

Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (custom installation)

    Hope this helps.

Thank You for using Windows 7

  • Right Ronnie,

but oddly the link to easy transfer is not to be found. When upgrading from XP on the first install wizard

there should be a link to access WET from the DVD without downloading or browsing the DVD

(root\support\migwiz) folder. It's supposed to streamline the process. I enlarged the illustrations please

    see first post.

  • Thanks Vivian,

I was impressed with the efficiency and ease of use of the Easy Transfer system right there on the DVD. I suspect human error for the missing link and would hope to see it restored.
