Sub Projects do not open when a Master Project is saved on local drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have multiple master projects in our PWA, each having multiple sub projects (ranging from minimum 3 sub projects to 50 sub projects in each master project). We have to share the schedules with the client on a regular basis. However if we save the master file locally, on the hard drive, and open it in the non-connected mode, the sub projects fail to expand. The reason is obvious that the sub projects are linked to the files on server, hence they open only when master file is opened in connected mode.

Is there a way to save master files locally along with all data of sub projects as well, and the same should be visible even when opening in non connected mode so that master file can be shared with the client, who does not have access to our PWA.

  • Have the exact same question...

The silence is deafening, looks like Microsoft has yet again, not thought things through.

The simplest solution would be to give your client Read-Only access to the master project and subprojects in your Project Server instance.  This would probably give your network security people fits, however.  An alternative would be to write a macro that opens and saves a local MPP copy of each subproject and the master project.  Just a thought.  Perhaps others members of this community will have ideas for you as well.  Hope this helps.

None of us work for Microsoft, nor do Microsoft staff monitor this forum, so silence from Microsoft should be expected on every question.  Please refer to the reply I just sent for a possible solution.  Hope this helps.
