VSS copies deleted

    Question

  • Hi,

We recently upgraded our main file server from 2008R2 to Server 2016. At that time we turned on Data Dedup. Everything worked well in this process. Then, a little over a month ago, we configured Volume Shadow Copies on this drive so that they could restore deleted items. We did not change the number of Shadow Copies to save, and I understand that the default is 64.We set up a schedule for Monday thru Friday every two hours. Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 5.66 GB (4%), Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 98.0 GB (81%). Everything worked normally until one Saturday when all the Shadow Copies were deleted. Looking at the Event Viewer, it looks like it began deleting copies one after the other with Event 33 “The oldest shadow copy of volume E: was deleted to keep disk space usage for shadow copies of volume E: below the user defined limit.” Then finally Event 36 “The shadow copies of volume E: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user imposed limit.” Looking at our Drive Space report that runs every day, our drive space went from 106 GB free on Friday to 22 GB free on Saturday, the day of the deletion.

We then checked all our settings and changed the schedule from once every hour to once every 2 hours (as we have it now). Then 28 days later the same thing happened. I read on a blog somewhere that a defrag could cause this, but our schedule is once a week for defrag, so it should not be the issue. One other thing, we are storing the copies on a separate volume.

    What can be causing this?

    Thanks
