How to delete driver files? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

How could I delete driver files?

I have encountered problems with my ATI driver, in particular, files belonging to Catalyst Control Center caused system to automatically reboot. In an attempt to solve this I uninstalled Catalyst Control Center from the Control Panel. But after doing that and search the driver file that caused the reboot:

    atikmdag.sys

They are still in the Windows directory. These files are not part of the graphic driver but only belongs to the Catalyst Control Center, so I expect that they should have been removed.

Then I tried to delete them by myself. However, Windows prompted me "You require permission from trusted installer to make change to this file".

How can I delete the file? Why the uninstallation from control panel is not thorough? Do I need to delete the files in Safe mode or DOS? Or does there exist any tool to completely delete all related files for a specific driver (or else, since strictly speaking Catalyst Control Center is not a driver here)?

    Thanks,
    Bob

  • You need to be running as Administrator.

Look for Driver Sweeper and it can help clean up residual driver files.

  • Never delete drivers from the WinSxS folder or you damaged your Windows. Install the latest Catalyst driver from here:

  • Dear Andre,

I looked through all driver files for ATI Radeon 3200 WDDM 1.1 in the device manager and atikmdag.sys are not included in the list.

    driver files screenshot

    1. If atikmdag.sys is not in the this driver file list, is it still used? If it is not used, why it still appears in the dump file history?

    2. If it is really not used, why shouldn't I delete that? How could I damage Windows?

    3. The data of modification for these all files starting with atikmdag are 7/14/09, which is before the official release date of Windows 7. However, I could also have installed driver from ATI and these are their residual files. Which is the case? Could you verify with the driver team to see if these are Windows bundled files or later installed? The size is 4.78MB.

    Thanks,
