Access to documents "access denied" permissions error . . . . .after transferring from old PC to new PC

  • This has happened with Windows 10 PRO and Windows 7 PRO now.

New PC, Fresh install of windows.  All updates, patches, fixes, etc.. installed.

I transfer the customers info from their OLD pc (windows 7 in one instance... windows vista in another)

After transfer the data IS accessible.  After reboot the data IS accessible...  after a few days "access denied" error. (permissions error)

I can move the same file to another location (folder) other than "documents" and the file will open fine.

I can transfer ALL The files to that location and the files will open fine.

IF I "move" the documents folder to the new location... after a day.... access denied (permissions error)

I am not doing anything that I haven't done over the last 10 years,... VERY FRUSTRATING.  I believe it is a windows update of some sort that is causing the problem but cannot pin it down.

    Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated!

  • Did you check permissions on specific folder ? And you have this issue in Windows 10 or 7 ?

  • Hi,

Have you checked the permission change under Security tab of Folder or file properties, before and after this issue?

I also recommend you test if the issue still happen in creating a new administrator account or the build-in administrator account?

We can also check the permission issue by using Process monitor when you are trying to access the problematic files or folders:

  • Checked permissions on folder and am unable to change permissions.  Even after transferring files to another folder the files transfer OK.... and the folder permissions are OK...  Files open.. then point "documents" to thatt folder....after 1 day or a reboot then same issue with new folder

  • There were postings and things pointing to the "one drive" application... I disabled that but still same issue.

My only resolution for the Windows 10 PC that fixed it was a wipe and re-install.

With the Windows 7 PC that seemed to fix it also but the problem eventually came back.

  • Hi John,

Sorry for the delayed response due to my sick leave.

According to current information, I recommend you Audit the folder to see when and what change the permission.

Check the audit log under Event viewer/ Security.

You can also post the save events onto OneDrive or similar network share and share the link here for our research.

Hope we can get the root cause of this issue.
