Windows 7 - unsigned drivers - how does win7 handle it? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
i transfered old GPO Preferences from 2k3 to a new Windows 7/2k8 Domain manually. One point which isn´t still in Server2008 is "Devices: unsigned driver behavior".

Now my question: How does WIN7 handle unsigned drivers. I thought  x64 needs signed drivers only!? not x86... Can i centralized install unsigned drivers without problems on WIN 7 x86 Machines?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the post.

Please understand that "Devices: Unsigned driver installation behavior" Group Policy setting does not appear in the Local Group Policy Editor user interface (UI) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008/Windows Vista/Windows7.

Given this situation, please refer to the following KB article to manually add the "Devices: Unsigned driver installation behavior" Group Policy setting.

How to let a user apply a Group Policy that has the "Devices: Unsigned driver installation behavior" Group Policy setting from a Windows Vista-based computer to a client computer

Note: Based on my test, the above method also works for Windows Server 2008 and Windows7.

However, if you encounter any permission issue when saving Sceregvl.inf file, please perform the following steps to

    1.    Right click the Sceregvl.inf file and select Properties.

    2.    On the Security tab, click Advanced.

    3.    When the prompted window shows up, on the Owner tab, change the owner to the appropriate account such as Administrator.

    4.    Click OK.

    5.    On the Security tab, click Edit.

    6.    Click Administrator account and set Full Control to Allow.

    7.    Click OK.

    Hope this helps.
