items in index RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am wondering about the following.

Lets say I have successfully indexed a bunch of text files that have a variety of file extension that sit in a directory.

I now want to remove a particular file extension from fast/sharepoint search results.

If I add a exclusion in sharepoint file types and then do an incremental crawl of the directory location will fast/sharepoint delete the item and all associated words that may exist in the index?

  • I don't think excluding the file type in sharepoint will help to remove the search results.

Excluding file type in SharePoint helps you to block certain file types to SharePoint sites.

If you need to exclude certain file types from search results, you may need to use Search Crawl Rules

  • Hi,

      There could be 2 options.

File Types under Crawling in Search Admin page. If you remove the file types under this section, those file types will not be indexed. Check if your file types are listed here

Crawl Rules: This helps you to define what content can be included or excluded in crawl. If you setup a Exclude rule as below it must exclude your files from next Full Crawl.

    Path: http://yourhostname/*.filetype

eg: http://myhostname/sites/ts1/*.html [This will exclude all .html files in  http://myhostname/sites/ts1/]

Crawl Configuration: Exclude all items in this path

Account: provide if you need to use specific account, otherwise default crawl account will be used.
