SSL Encryption - Expired Certificates RRS feed

  • Question

  • Quick question.. I have been searching for the answer but I only see very old results.  If we install a certificate for sql server to use, and the certificate expires, what will happen?  The older threads dating back 10 years all stated that SQL Server doesn't look at the ValidTo date on the cert so nothing will happen.  But I just want to verify.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my question!

    Jay

SSL uses certificates to authenticate the server to the client and establish an encrypted communications channel with the database. Based on my test, your SQL Service will not be started if the certificate gets expired.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.
