Vista SP2 MSDSM "Driver Error"

Question
-
I have three computers that I thought were identical with regard to hardware and software. However, one of them doesn't detect the need for Vista SP2. I downloaded SP2 and tried to install it. The setup program checked the computer out and brought up a screen saying one or more drivers might be incompatible. The driver it lists is MSDSM. It says Please read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 967752 which is about Server 2008 and makes no reference to Vista. Should I apply the reghack mentioned in the article? What happens if I tell it to "ignore and continue" with the install?

It is safe to select the ignore and continue option.
I just did it on my Dell laptop. It confused me because the article in question was referencing MPIO storage devices on Windows Server 2008 systems which I don't run. I just run a simple laptop with Vista.
It turns out that the cause of this error comes from having installed an update. You can read up on the update at KB972036. I recall having that update pop up last night thereabouts when I did a Windows Update.
You can remove the update and the error should stop but I just went ahead with ignore and continue.- Marked as answer by Curt Finley Friday, August 28, 2009 5:39 PM

I just read another posting regarding this problem. Here's the link to the posting on the MS forum.

If you have any information about this or if you could understand what the KB says about the registry I'd appreciate hearing what it is. I'm sure PhantomEngineer on the other site would love to hear also. Maybe we can all figure this thing out working on it together?

I'm having the same problem too. I guess it's because this Service Pack 2 update just came out on Wednesday. I'm also interested in what would happen if you just go ahead and "ignore and continue." I'll keep and eye out here and see if anyone comes up with a solution.Thursday, August 27, 2009 4:37 AM

I am having the same issue, and couldn't find anything to resolve the issue. I go the 967752 error as well. I am not going to install it until I see what the issue is because it says that some drivers (plural) may not work. I am not going to chance it.Thursday, August 27, 2009 1:03 PM

Thank you all. My update to SP2 gave me no warning and went smoothly. But as I was trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium X64 to Vista Ultimate, I saw the warning and upon some research I landed here. Thank you all for a heads up. I will abort the update.Thursday, August 27, 2009 1:16 PM

Your Vista won't boot anymore. After the reboot it comes up with a really strange error. Nothing will work anymore.
Even system restore can't restore anymore. I had to reinstall my Computer.
So no SP2 for me untill this is fixed.Thursday, August 27, 2009 1:40 PM -
I have this same issue downloading and trying to install SP2.
I just bought an HP e9140f, Windows Media Center PC, Vista Home Premium, currently running SP 1, AMD Phenom II X4 925 Processor 2.8 GHz, 8 GB memory, 1 TB hard drive, 64 bit operating system. Whew, what a mouthful! So, the bottom line here is that the referenced Vista SP2 MSDSM "Driver Error" for a Server 2008 system doesn't apply to me either. BUT, I'm not installing it anyway and I will tell you why.
I have had nothing but problems with this PC for about a month now since I got it, and in particular Windows Media Center, and an issue with it trying to play live TV. I have been on HP tech line to India, the Philippines, and a very little with the US support groups. It has a Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1290 (Model 85xxx, Combo ATSC/QAM, SW Encode) TV card, and an ATI Radeon HD 4650 display adapter in it, both factory installed in this system model. I will post that issue on another error post here as well.
We have gone through SO MANY troubleshooting steps over this past month I can't remember them all. However, I know one of those steps under their direction was to download and install ALL the updates, one being SP2. After that the video just hung the whole PC including the screen such that I had to shut down, drain the power by unplugging the system, holding the on button down for 3 minutes, then starting over. Can you believe that? I couldn't either, but I complied. Once I rebooted the system again they had my revert to and update 3 days prior to SP1, where I was having problems with the live TV coming through on certain channels in the first place. Yes, I get those channels through my service provider, Comcast, and through all 3 other set top boxes including another Vista system system 2 1/2 years running Ultimate, and a laptop running XP Home. So, no problems on the TVs or PCs. What do they tell me, which I know they wanted to shift the blame? They said it was the set top box!!!!! I insisted it wasn't. After I got done with them I proved it to myself and switched the boxes and I was right, ...it's the PC and something in like the cards, drivers, or something in there. I went to the store (another retailer) and bought another e9140f and set it up and it had the same TV hanging problem, so I took it back the next day. IT IS THIS HP e9140f SYSTEM AND WHAT'S IN IT!!!
Having said all of that and weighing all the options, I figured I'd wait and see if someone comes out with a fix before the 90 return guarantee runs out, since on other things it seems to run ok, .....until trying SP2 again, and now the warning! I think after so many others have had an issue with this SP2 update, and now that the feedback is getting back to them, this warning now comes up about a driver. Did you notice it doesn't identify the driver? It's probably because Microsoft hasn't identified it either. When I click the link to get to the link it's pointing to I get a 'cannot connect to internet' flag, which of course, I think, MS is trying to point the finger at you and your internet connection. However, I open a browser window and connect to a site, and PRESTO!! It ain't me or my system's internet connection. Sorry Microsoft, your perhaps latest blame shift attempt didn't work with me!
And did you all know that while in 'Device Manager' if you click 'View', then 'Show hidden devices', at least some (maybe and maybe not all) Microsoft's hidden devices will then show up on the list? When I did that a 'Microsoft Streaming Quality Manager Proxy', which by the way was released 6/21/2006 (OVER 3 YEARS ago!), showed up. I only mentioned that one because I have a major live TV issue here with my PC, besides the SP2 update error. But, that also leads me to the question, "why would Microsoft 'hide' their devices??" Perhaps they want to hide behind something to escape blame????
Now what is the issue we're faced with here Microsoft? Step up to the plate Microsoft 'techies' and fix this issue for us and all the others that haven't posted it here that have this same issue.
Give us an answer AND fix!!!
...The next day ...after the so called "fix".I followed the suggested fix and uninstalled update 972036, then trieed SP2 again. Well, ...it got mostly through it and encountered issues and said it would try again after the reboot. I tried and apparety encountered the same issues so reverted, or at least said it reverted to before it tried the SP2 install. However, it now boots and upon logging in cannot find 3 drivers. They are:
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
Microsoft ISATAP Adapter (twice ...must be 2 in there)
TUN Adapter (must be associated wit the ISATAP somehow)My system is FIXED alright! NOT!!!!!
It searches and cannot find the fixes, even though I went to the HP website and at least personally downloaded the NVIDIA driver. I rebooted and still comes up with the same 3 issues.
Well, today I need to wrap things up for a week of vacation. I'm clearing all my stuff I can off of this thing, running the free download File Shredder from FileShredder.org to wipe clean all my no longer existing stuff off of the free disk space, and returning this unit for a full refund.
I'll guess I'll find out how that goes. :-(

KenTechNerd2:
I have same system as you except I instaled ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series graphics adapter, and matching WD 1TB hard disk, and an Antec 550 power supply. Enabling RAID-1 was easy if you are smart enough to use the Intel Matrix application (not the ALT-I ap). As shipped the PC is "Raid Ready."
This post is to share 3 comments: 1) HP tech support takes a whole lot of patience to get to a helpful tech. A whole lot!!! 2) My system has been very solid, so there is hope for you to perservere. 3) I can not install SP-2 because of the MSDSM driver isssue (I have not, and will not choose the "Ignore" option). I'm pretty sure it identifies the failing driver is MSDSM (???)
I guess we just have to wait for MS to solve the SP-2 driver issue....

Well I went ahead and uninstalled the KB972036 update and I was then able to install the Service Pack 2 without any problems. Now should I reinstall KB972036? I was prompted to do this when I restarted my computer. Thanks for your help!Friday, August 28, 2009 5:11 AM

The whole question is answered here;
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/972036
this is the Information on the update causing the issue. Microsoft should have pointed all users with the error here rather than to an KB article about Server 2008, wen obviously we are running Vista.
What is says is, if you install update 972036 before SP2 you ay get the following errors on Server 2008 or Vista
If so uninstall the update, apply SP2 then reinstall the update.
This is great, Service Pack 2 needs you to authorise its install yet this 972036 doesn't if you use auto updates.
So i had no choice but when i turned my PC on yesterday to reboot after it autoinstalled 972036 and then and only then did it inform me SP2 is available for install, so because Microsoft set this updtae to a level that can be auto installed before SP2 and ot made SP2 a pre-requisit of it, most people will end up with this error.
Nice thinking Microsoft, learn how your own software works on its recommended settings for users!!!!!!
How about if 972036 is known to cause problems with the update to SP2 that it can only be installed if SP2 is already applied, that way it fixes the problem for all these many people!!! Not exactly rocket science, because I only found this full explanation out by being nosey to see what 972036 actually did!!!
Hope this helpsFriday, August 28, 2009 1:05 PM -
Thanks for this information. I installed the update on my laptop on Wednesday and was receiving blue screen of death all the time. Vista would not boot. I couldn't isolate the problem as it was an automatic update and I didn't know what had been updated to cause the problem. Needless to say I pay attention more now. I reinstalled my entire laptop and will follow those instructions and link provided above or maybe just hold off for a while. Glad to know I am not the only one having this trouble.Friday, August 28, 2009 2:41 PM

Go Here:
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/972036
It lists all of the possible problems with the SP2 update and the solutions. I did it and it worked fine! :) Unfortunately Microsoft didn't think to add this to their update so we could have avoided the search altogether.- Proposed as answer by Ruckus24 Monday, August 31, 2009 7:24 PM
