DPM Client status never gets past 'administrator has not configured backups' RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using DPM 2010. I have 2 servers being protected fine. I have 1 windows 7 client working fine.

When I add the problem windows 7 PC, it installs fine, eveything looks ok.. no errors. I am able to install and remove the DPM client from the DPM server.

I ran the DCOMtest from microsoft and at first failed.. then I added the domain user I log into the problem computer with, to the  administrators group of the DPM server. Now the DCOM test is successful.

but no matter what I do, when ever I start the DPM client on the problem computer, it always says 'Current Status  Administrator has not configured Backups'

I have this computer configured in the same protection group that the other windows 7 workstations are in.. and they are working. We are all on the same network, the same domain, and I have turned off the firewall on the server and the cleints..

    help!

  • I cant make a recovery point, because I never can start the sync,

If I right click on the computer in the protection group and choose 'create recovery point'

    I get

cannot perform creation of recovery point on a replica which is pending manual replica creation (ID: 31207)

Complete the manual creation of the replica and then retry this operation

  • If you look at the client-side what is the status of the agent?

  • the title says it all :)

    DPM Client status always shows

    'administrator has not configured backups'

    Thursday, September 23, 2010 8:42 PM
  • since yesterday, I have added 3 more desktop computers to the protection group. 2 windows 7 and 1 vista.. They are all working perfect.. all except 1 windows 7 machine.. mine... it has to be something on this computer..but I ahve no idea what it might be.

it seems that I must be connecting to the DPM or else I would not get the 'adminsitrator has not configured backups' message.  Yesterday I removed all the DPM software for my computer and removed all references to this machine on the DPM server. Then I installed the DPM client manually on the windows 7 computer and ran the DPM cleint. As expected it showed 'Cannot connect to DPM server'. Then I add it to the DPM server via the shell prompt and then add it to the protection group. and point the cleint to the server usign the setdpmserver.exe program on the cleint machine.

At this point you would think it would start syncing, but instead it says  'Administartor has not configured backups'

so that tells me that it is talking with the DPM, but it seems like thereis some permission setting on the client that is not allowing the DPM to tell it what to protect. When I click on 'company retention policy' it is blank.

  • I have not seen this error before, but to me it seems the client does not recognize that you have added it to a protection group on the DPM server. Perhaps you could remove it from the exisiting protection group and create a new protection group and add the client and test.

You can also check the DPMClientProtection log at %Program Files%\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Temp to see if any errors are getting logged.

  • I have created and deleted the protection group a bunch of time.. but sometimes you overlook something. so I will do it again now.

ok done.. same issue.. still says 'administrator has not configured backups'

here is the last few entries from the error log

it keeps saying it failed to set client OS details.. hmmm.. this computer was XP. then upgraded to vista when that came out, and then upgraded to windows 7 when that came out.. I wonder if something got messed up in the registry

  • the 0x80070005  Failed to set client OS details is an access denied error. It appears the validation of the machine sid is failing. Would it be possible, as a test, to rename the client, reboot and try again?

  • sure.. I actually did that already.. but I will do it again, I will remove me from the protection group. change the name.. reboot, and add the new name to the DPM server.

  • Are you getting a OK on the DPM server Agents status -

I was having some of the same issues - and found that some firewall setting & SEP were getting in the way -

Try stopping you Network Connections services and see if the Server will see the Agents, and update the connection.

  • I had same problem. I solved it by:

went to DPM Agent on Client > clicked on Protected Items tab and deselected everything. Than i opened the client again, clicked on Protected Items and selected folders i want to backup. The sync with DPM started within 10 sec.

    Hope this helps

  • I had the same problem with 2 laptops out of over 200 working systems.  The only way I was able to get them to work was to uninstall the agent and push it from the server.

  • I seem to have the same issue. Unfortunately when I click on Protected Items and try to select or de-select anything, the message "Administrator has not configured..." which means I cannot do anything there.

I have also tried a server-sided push, with the same result.

    Any other ideas?

  • Eerazor,

I don't have any other ideas right now, could you open a support case so we can collect some data from you and further troubleshoot this issue?

    Thanks,

    Marc

  • Hi,

I had the same problem as well. Tried everything.
just before giving up i created a new Protection Group, and added the problematic laptops to it.

    and it worked!

my guess is that DPM has limitation regarding how much clients can be added to the same protection group.

My original protection group was with 100 laptops.
and all the latest one failed to be backup like described here.

  • Another thing you can do in case you must have some sort of backup to the laptop's is to create a Server protection group and add them to it.

    it will work.
