SharePoint 2013 search Index partition is taking lot of disk space RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have recently changed the settings of Managed Properties in our SharePoint farm. Ever since we did that search is consuming a lot of disk space and is still continuing after 6 days taking more space each days. We cannot find the cause.

Can someone point us in right direction please.

  • Hello Shruti,

I don't think the index size have anyhing to do with the settings of managed properties. The index size is based on the content in your sharepoint. If your users add a lot of content in sharepoint recently, it's normal that the index would become larger.

Besides, you could try to reset the index and run a full crawl.

  • Hi Michael,

    Thanks for your response!

We did an index reset and full crawl and the disk is running out of space all the times. The problem is that we have more than 13 million items and full crawl after index reset takes very long time. Last full crawl after index reset took almost 6 days, which doesn't go very well with the client. It freed up lots of space initially and we are in third week now, it has started consuming disk space rapidly. We had been digging through log files but can't find the cause yet. We will be reverting our changes and resetting the index again in the hope for problem to get resolved.

Is there any alternative to index reset?

  • Hello Shruti,

If you have over 13 million items, it's normal that search would consume lagre disk space. And your search doesnot have any issues, so you can't find any clues in the log.

In SharePoint 2013, over 13 million items belongs to medium search farm. The best way is rebuilding your search architecture.

  • Thanks Michael for your quick response!

I was doing some research on the topology side and found that Microsoft recommends adding another index partition if there are more than 10 millions items. The problem is that we have only 1 index partition and 1 replica, so that explains issue we are having.

However, I can't understand why this issue occurred after we implemented below changes:

    1. Modified 3 managed properties to make them sortable and refinable.
    2. Shared 1 column in Document Set settings for the most widely used document set in the application.

We had 12 million records till mid April and had no issues. We implemented the changes on 29th April and on 1st April our SP index disk ran out of space.
