Hard Drive redundancy suggestions for Vista RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can anyone suggest a good alternative for setting up RAID 1 (Mirroring) on Vista ultimate?  I've got a Dell Optiplex 745, which has no current RAID controller.  I have 2 SATA hard drives (only one currently has any data on it, the other I was going to set up as a software mirror until I discovered Vista doesnt support this configuration).  If I got a RAID hardware controller, would it be possible to simply swap my hard drive w/the OS on it now onto the new controller without losing data or reinstalling the OS?  If so, how would that work?  If not, what other options (aside from a clean reinstall) would I have at this point?  Is there 3rd party RAID software that is decent that would allow this in Vista?

Hardware based RAID controller combines two or more physical hard disks, but Windows Vista uses them as a single logical hard disk. It will be a significant hardware changing to Windows Vista. In order to avoid unexpected issue, we must reinstall Windows Vista after setting up RAID 1. Thank you for your understanding.

By the way, you can use Windows Vista Backup function to keep your data.
