Blank screen when I log into my Windows Nano Server

    Question

  • Hello All,

I'm a beginner to Microsoft Windows. Lately I have trying to run a Windows Nano server on Hyper-V. However, Everytime I boot up the VM, it shows black screen. Below are the steps that I performed to create the virtual machine for Windows Nano server.

    1. Created a Windows Nano server disk using below command.

    PS C:\Users\Administrator> Import-Module D:\NanoServer\NanoServerImageGenerator\NanoServerImageGenerator.psm1
PS C:\Users\Administrator> New-NanoServerImage -DeploymentType Guest -Edition Standard -MediaPath <DVD ISO> -TargetPath
    C:\NANO01.vhdx -ComputerName <Computername> -DomainName <domain.com> -Package Microsoft-NanoServer-IIS-Package

    2. Copied the vhdx file to my physical machine.

    3.  Created a new VM using the vhdx from above step in Hyper-V.

This lab has a Domain Controller with DHCP role installed. All the VM's in the lab are in same network with same Virtual Network ID.

Can anyone suggest a solution here?

  • Nevermind. Found the problem here. I was using Generation 1 while installing the VM for Nano server via Hyper-V. Turns out Generation 2 works well!!!

  • Hello,

Could you provide us with some more information of your Hyper-V host?

Do you have additional Hyper-V virtual machines, if yes does this "blank screen" only happen to your Nano server?

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • 1) I am running the Hyper-V on Windows 10. It has 8GB RAM and intel i7 processor with 2 cores with hyperthreading.

    2) It only happens to the Nano server. My other VM's work fine except for this Nano server.

  • When you have the console in front of you, have you tried using the  ctrl-alt-del or pressing any keys while having the console window active?

Also check your graphics cards drivers that they are up to date.

  • I tried pressing ctrl-alt-end while in the Hyper-V console for the nano server. All it does is a cursor blink that happens anyway. When I press anything the cursor goes to next line without anything showing up on the screem.

Yes, my graphics drivers are up-to-date.
