Upgrade to SP1 for Exchange and Forefront

Question
-
We are getting ready to perform this upgrade. I have read where we need to dismount the db and other times it does not mention it.
When we upgrade Forefront SP1 first, don't we need to stop all the services and dismount the db (I have read you need to dismount it from exchange). Next we perform the upgrade to Exchange SP1 and do we need to have the db dismounted as well?
Thanks

Hi,I think ForeFront SP1 upgrade doesn't require Exchange Service restart. But you need to follow the procedure give in below KB article to disconnect Forefront Security from Exchange Server with FSCUtility tool before installing SP/Hotfix on Exchange server. this procedure requires to stop Exchange services. How to install a service pack or a software update on an Exchange Server computer that is running Forefront Security Applying Exchange Service Packs and HotfixesDeploying Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1Yes the sequence is correct, you should first install SP1 for ForeFront and then SP1 for Exchange.

For upgrade Forefront for exchange SP1:
“When you start the upgrade installation, Setup detects the old version and asks you to confirm the upgrade. You are asked if you want to stop the Exchange Information Store, the Exchange Transport Service, the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), and the Performance Logs and Alerts Service. All these services will be stopped, updated, and started again, without the need for restarting the server”
Refer to < Installing Forefront Security>
Upgrade will require for restart, if server is running any monitoring software like MOM. You can prevent it by stop MOM agent or any other monitoring software (More in the KB 945572)
For upgrade exchange 2007 SP1:
Please disable Forefront by using FSCUtility as Amit said before upgrade exchange 2007 to SP1, or it will no longer function correctly
Also refer to <Installing Forefront Security>
A summary for upgrade Forefront for Exchange (FSE) SP1 & Exchange 2007 SP1:
1. Check the FSE version (KB 946783)
· If it’s Forefront for Exchange SP1, go to step 4
· If it’s Forefront for Exchange RTM (service pack 0), upgrade to Forefront for Exchange SP1
2. If it’s a standalone server, install the FSE SP1 directly
3. If it’s a cluster server, please follow this article
4. Install Exchange 2007 SP1, please follow the two articles that Amit posted
