  • Aloha Charles!

That is exactly the work-around I used, but it frustrated me to add extra steps, when time is money. I felt I was entitled to open a doc with one click - especially when I was using all Microsoft software...

Mr. Chen solved my problem with the following:

"You may need to choose the default program for this type of files.

For example, if it's a .docx file, go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs -> Associate a file type or protocol with a program -> Highlight ".docx" from the list, click the "Change program" button -> Select "Word(Desktop". Then the association is made and you should be able to open .docx files with Word as default."

I don't know how Office was chosen as the default for docx.  I didn't do it.  It had to be chosen by the computer, as I'm the only one, who used that computer.  Be that as it may, when I switched it to MS Word, the mystery was solved!

Mahalo for your time and expertise!

  • Welcome to the club.

    Try re-registering MS Word.

in the Windows search on the Start Page type:

    winword.exe /r

Like the screenshot above except with an "r" instead of an "a"

    Click on the found term.

The screenshot is from Win 8.1 but I think they are similar on this.

  • Mahalo nui (Thanks),Charles.

You were right about Windows 8, the app did show up and I clicked on it and it did whatevers...  however, I still get the same message, when I try to open my document, i.e. "This App can't run on your PC."

I do appreciate your time and knowledge, but I'm still in the same pickle.  <sigh>

  • What happens if you run Word from the Start screen directly and then open the document?
