Installing Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am currently running a machine with win 7 enterprise 64-bit and would like to additionally have the test version of win 2008 server r2 with sp1 available; can I install 2008 server on an external hard drive using Hyper-V-Manager, or MS Virtual PC? If this is doable, please advise how to.

  • Windows 2008 R2 is x64, VPC only supports 32bit clients.  Hyper-V is a feature of Windows 2008 Server, it is not something you can install on a Windows 7 client OS.  The Hyper-V manager is just a MMC console for remotely managing a server running Hyper-V.

Your only option for running x64 VMs on Windows 7 is a 3rd party solution like VMware Workstation or Player, Oracle Virtualbox, or Parallels Workstation.
