hi there
isnt there a best practice for each MP , let me explain this
say i have 5 different MPs and ofcourse we know that they come by default with specific activated monitors ...etc , how can i know that this trigger or this parameter is important or not to remain it active ? or just leave the default and just import the MP with no customization ? isnt there a kind of guidelines for each MP to recommend what to remain on or what to change ?
in other words you judge or decide based on what :) ?Tuesday, March 9, 2010 3:30 PM

Hi
One of the best things you can do is set up a small dev environment and play with OpsMgr. It is such a big product covering such a wide range of applications that you can only read so much about it. Having said that, this is one of the best sites I have found for general guidelines on management packs:
http://ops-mgr.spaces.live.com/?_c11_BlogPart_BlogPart=blogview&_c=BlogPart&partqs=amonth%3d11%26ayear%3d2009
The MOM Team blog can also be useful. E.g:
http://blogs.technet.com/momteam/archive/2007/07/19/active-directory-management-pack-checklist.aspx
And then there are a couple of MSFT blogs that are extremely useful:
http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/default.aspx
http://blogs.technet.com/jimmyharper/
And there is always for the forum for more specific questions.
Good Luck

Start with the MP guide document that you can download for each management pack. This is the way to know what is in the MP, what is turned off by default, and in some of the better examples, what is being monitored.
Once you exhaust the information in the guide, the MVP's here have special tuning guides for most MP's that get released.

Hi
As Dan says, there are Management Pack guides plus experience:
If you do a search on Management Pack Lifecycle this should help define a process for you:

@dan , now when i import each MP i find that guide ? sorry but im new to SCOM :)
@graham as an example i want to know what is the best practices for monitoring lets say exchange 2007 , from your experience please what do you suggest
this example is important for me to understand this lifecycle and do like a special document for every MP i import in future :)Tuesday, March 9, 2010 7:29 PM -
I'm guessing you downloaded the MP using the Operations Console. When you import MPs, this way, the MP guide is not available.
If you download MPs from http://pinpoint.microsoft.com/en-US/systemcenter/managementpackcatalog, your download will be an MSI file. After the contents of the MSI are extracted, you should see the *.mp files and a Word document. The Word doc is the MP guide.
