Setting up a new WSUS Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • We currently have a Server 2008 R2 server that runs our WSUS service. In preparation for Windows 10 we are setting up a 2012 R2 box.  We run the Database on an external SQL 2014 server.  Is there a way to effectively move everything over to the 2012 box? I'm looking for some kind of guide that will show me step-by-step....

  • Hi dkunk,

    1. I would recommend to use WID for WSUS 2012R2, since to deploy win10 upgrade, we need to install KB3095113 and KB3159706 on the WSUS server, while according to others' experience, there might be some issues when using external database with KB3159706.

    2. Then you may use the following method:

    1) Install WSUS role on server 2012R2 and install KB3095113 and KB3159706(with manual steps);

    2) Make the WSUS 2012 R2 server to be the replica downstream server of the 2008R2 WSUS server; then you may replica related configurations and updates on WSUS 2012 R2 from WSUS 2008R2;

    3) After then, change the WSUS 2012R2 to be autonomous, and sync from Microsoft Update; and dismission WSUS 2008R2.

    4) Modify GPO settings to make WSUS server to be new WSUS 2012R2, NOTE, for WSUS 2012R2, we need to append the port to the URL. For example, "specify intranet Microsoft update service location": http://wsus2012r2:8530;

    5) On WSUS 2012R2, do some additional configurations to meet your requirements;

    Best Regards,

    Anne
