MS Project server 2013 minimal setup scenarios RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We bought project server 2013 and we need to know what is the minimum setup  to make it works ? Does we need to install a complete Sharepoint solution or is it possible to install only some components ?

I found the information about the small dataset setup on the product page but it still a bigg solution for our needs. My big concern is about the sharepoint installation and implementation, so I need to know if we have some alternatives solutions

Thanks in advance for all your answers

  • Hugues,

    Few things to consider here:

    a) You cannot get away from SharePoint installation, as this is a prerequisite for using Project Server 2013.

    b) If you are just testing the waters, and just want to see it working, you could do the stand-alone installation (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197667(v=office.15).aspx). Please note that I do not recommend using this for Real Production environments

    c) Another alternative is try Project Online. No setup required, other than some configuration.

    d) http://www.projecthosts.com/ host the project server, and take care of all maintenance.

Bottom line, the server maintenance could be off-loaded, and the config is generally learnable.

  • The only service that needs to be installed is Project Services to get the basics of project server running.  However,if you want to produce reports, then I would suggest the following services

    Secure Store Service

    Excel Services

    Performance Point Service

    SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Service)

    Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Incoming E-Mail

    cheers!

  • Hi Hugues,

Are you sure Project Server is what you need?  Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan, but which bit(s) of it are you going to use.  As for minimum config, it works out of the box, but unless all you needed was single view of all of your projects in one place via the "Project Centre" you'll need to do at least some configuration.
