Migrate publishing subsite into root site RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone,

I'm aware of the publishing site's limitation (links below) - "For site collections that make use of the publishing feature it is not supported to migrate root sites into sub sites or sub sites into root sites". My question is what is the best tool to accomplish this...if it is possible?

I need to migrate a SharePoint 2013 subsite with around 40 sub-subsite and size about 5 GB to the site collection root.  For example current structure: http://site/na...want to make it http://na.

    1. Tried in the past with MetaLogix's ControlPoint in SP 2007 with no luck also tried Powershell Export-SPWeb.
    2. Anyone used ShareGate for this?
    3. Also Seeing Gary's post on this too... http://blog.falchionconsulting.com/index.php/2007/09/convert-a-sub-site-to-a-site-collection. Anyone comments?
    4. Currently I'm redirecting users to the subsite from the landing page...what are the other options? URL rewrite from IIS?

    Appreciate any feedback.

  • 2 questions for you

    1. Do you need to replicate any functionality that's specific to Publishing Sites?
    2. Regarding Metalogix Control Point, that's more of an admin too.  Try their Content Matrix instead (25GB free version), which should be of more assistance - http://www.metalogix.com/Resources/Promotions/Content-Matrix/Content-Matrix-Migration-Express-Download.aspx

  • Thanks Steven for your quick feedback. Below are the responses.

    1. Yea - it's a publishing site and can't loose that content approval, custom page layouts, master page etc.

    2. ControlPoint does copy other site templates just fine except the Publishing site template I figured. will look into Content Matrix.

    Regards!

  • Hi,

For your issue, you can have a look at the SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard. With this tool, you can back up and restore your SharePoint 2013 site  with content.

    Best Regards,

    Eric

  • Thanks Eric - will give Content Deployment Wizard a try. Do you know whether publishing site copy works with this or not?
