Windows Server 2008 R2 KB4480970 Update Failed - Error Code 80242016

    Question

  • One of our servers got this error installing a windows update:

2019-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4480970)
    Installation date: ‎1/‎27/‎2019 4:55 PM
    Installation status: Failed
    Error details: Code 80242016

I tried manually downloading the update "2019-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4480970)" and installing it, but it says "This update is not applicable to your computer."

When I search for updates it says "Windows is up to date - There are no updates available for your computer."

How do I install this update?

    Thanks.

  • I tried manually downloading the update "This update is not applicable to your computer."

I'd check the SSU prerequisite has been installed.

  • You can the following notice from the KB: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4480970/windows-7-update-kb4480970

Microsoft strongly recommends you install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system before installing the latest Rollup. SSUs improve the reliability of the update process to mitigate potential issues while installing the Rollup and applying Microsoft security fixes.

If you are using Windows Update, the latest SSU (KB3177467) will be offered to you automatically. To get the stand-alone package for the latest SSU, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog

  • Thank you Dave and Ahmed for the suggestion, but I don't think that's the issue. I checked the Windows update history:

    Installation date: ‎11/‎27/‎2018 11:53 AM
