Broken links piling up in NetHood (Network Shortcuts) RRS feed

  • Hi,

    many users in our domain are facing a strange problem. The NetHood folder (or "Network Shortcuts" in Win7) in their profiles keeps filling with broken links to network folders.
    This results in a long list of broken links in the windows explorer tree view, when "Computer" is expanded.

    The broken links show up as a white icon and are named after pattern "folder on servername", e.g. "Documents on intranet". But clicking on them doesn't do anything, and they don't seem to have any properties other than their name. They can be deleted, but will be recreated over time.

    I'm guessing that these are created when a user saves a document to a network folder, e.g. a sharepoint document library via WebDAV. But why are they broken? And how can I stop this behaviour?

  • Have several users (or visit their workstations) and use the problem steps recorder when they save a document to a network folder.

    I don't believe that you can resolve this issue until it is determined how the links are created and then how they are broken.

    I would like to verify whether all Windows 7 computers have the same issue or not. Does the issue occur when the user log on different computers?

     

    Meanwhile, you can refer to the following methods to narrow down the issue.

     

    1. Save files to network not via WebDAV.

    2. Disable Offline Files in Sync Center.

    3. Use ShellExView to disable third party extension.

     

    a.     Download ShellExView v1.41 from the following link http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.zip

     

    Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.

     

    b.     Right-click the "shexview.zip" file, select "Extract All", the Extraction Wizard will prompt.

    c.     Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox.

    d.     Click Next and click Finnish.

    e.     Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions.

    f.     Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard.

    g.     Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes.

    h.     Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

  • After more research, the problem occurs only when users use "Save as..." from Office applications (Word, Excel, ...) to save documents in the company Sharepoint site. It seems as if the shortcuts are not only stored to the "Recent" folder (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\Recent), but also to the "Network Shortcuts" folder (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts).
