MS Project 2016 - Sorry, we were unable to open your project.

Question

Hello,
lately, more and more customers are having issue with opening Project via Project Web App.
When opening project, they receive error message: Sorry, we were unable to open your project. Please try again. If this happens again, contact your administrator.
This is happening both in IE and Chrome (Have no info about other browsers)
For me, I am having this issue just with Chrome right now. IE and Edge are working properly for me.
So far, I tried following:
- Cleaning cache
- Removing windows credentials
- Updating Office/Project
Would be glad for any help.
Regards, Martin.

Hello, I figured out solution for Windows 10 users with MS Engineer.
First you need to get latest version of MS Project - version 1803 (Build 9126.2072 Click-To-Run)(Monthly Channel) and latest version of chrome: 65.0.3325.162.
After that
Step 1 - Remove the user account from MS Project Professional profile
- MS Project -> upper right corner Switch Account – Sign out all and confirm.
Step 2 - Remove connected services from your Office 2016 profile
- File -> Account -> Connected Services -> remove all
Step 3 - Fully clear the MS Project cache
- C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MS Project
- Delete everything in folder \MS Project
Step 4 - Clear cached credentials on the computer
a) Edit the registry to remove cached credentials. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- In Registry Editor, locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16\Common\Identity\Identities
- Select the Office account that you want to get rid-off, and then rename to xxxxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx_xxxxx.OLD.
b) Remove the cached credentials in Credentials Manager. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open Control Panel, and then click Credentials Manager.
- Under Generic Credentials, remove all MicrosoftOffice16_Data:ADALxxxxxxxxxx entries.
c)Log off, and then log on to your computer.
After all those steps, I have no longer issue with Chrome and MS Project 😊

We are having the same issue. I've opened 2 tickets with MS about this and have been provided workarounds that are, unfortunately, not full workarounds, see below. MS said they are aware that this is an issue but could not provide information on when it would be addressed/fixed. Who receives the error and when they receive it is also inconsistent. Some people have the issue in both IE and Chrome, some only in IE and some in neither - all on Windows 7 OS. On computers with Windows 10, this issue comes and goes in IE.
1) Always open PWA projects from Project and never the other way around.
This workaround allows access to projects themselves, but Enterprise Reource Calendars cannot be accessed for editing this way nor can we create new enterprise resource calendars when doing this was.2) We're on IE 11, change it to run in compatibility mode = 10 or just use Chrome.
This has not worked consistently for our users. it's about a 50/50 split for everyone on the same version of IE and OS.If you or anyone else comes across a more permanent solution, I'd love to know.

Hi
We did have the same troubles, but the above solution didn't work for us.
Microsoft did gave us this link.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3185078/how-to-switch-from-semi-annual-channel-to-monthly-channel
The trick was to change the update from Monthly to semi-annual by changing the following registry key
You can see the update type under File --> Accounts
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration\CDNBaseUrl
From;
CDNBaseUrl = http://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/64256afe-f5d9-4f86-8936-8840a6a4f5be
To:
CDNBaseUrl = http://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/b8f9b850-328d-4355-9145-c59439a0c4cf
And finally go to 'Programs and Features", finding the MS Project Professional, and choose repair.
When asked choose online repair.
When finished our troubles for weeks was gone 😊
