Server 2008 R2 backup options RRS feed

  • Question

  • Have a question somewhat regarding licensing for backups for Windows Server 2008 R2.  Basically I have a windows server 2008 r2 instance installed on my PowerEdge 2850 server.  I want to have another instance of Windows Server 2008 R2 running on another physical server, but I only want to use it as a failover in case the main server craps out.  Can I just install server 2008 r2 on the backup server and not activate it since it is not really being used and then if the main server fails can I just transfer over my server license to the new backup server?

Second part of my question would be if I have enterprise edition and I am utilizing only 2 of the 4 virtual license that comes with server 2008 r2, do I have to have hyper v installed on the server and use it to manage my virtual machines or can I put those virtual machines on a vmware esxi server.  Basically I'm wanting to have a virtual container of the main server and if the Physical machine fails then I'll have the virtual container running on my esxi server as a backup until I get the physical machine back up, but if I am forced to use the physical machine to manage the virtual machines then obviously if the physical server dies then so do the virtual machines.  Any help would be appreciated!!!
