Vista Media Center & Recorded TV file sizes RRS feed

  • Question

I use Vista Media Center on my HTPC to record television shows while I'm busy with other things.

What I've noticed is that each hour of TV takes around 3.5GB to 4GB of hard drive space because of the quality settings I chose.

Considering the fact that mfgrs are able to put four, far higher quality, 1 hour shows on a DVD, this is crazy for a 1 hour show from analog cable.

I want to transcode these recorded shows to another format, but programs like TMPEG cannot read the .dvr-ms format.

I looked at Windows Movie Maker, but these require me to burn the file to a DVD and I don't want to do that. I paid good money for 3TB of storage to store my TV shows on so I can watch them on the computer,  not to have a thousand burned DVDs laying around

Any suggestions on a program that will read the .dvr-ms format and allow me to transcode it to another format?
