Word 2016 crashes during Spelling & Grammar check

Question
-
Using Word 2016 16.0.4639.111 64-bit
Every time I run a spelling a grammar check, eventually the program crashes, sometimes with a WINWORD.exe the exception unknown software exception (0xe0000002) error message, sometimes no message. Sometimes the program automatically relaunches to the main menu, sometimes not.
I've uninstalled and re-installed, and done a full round of updates to no effect. After browsing forums, I tried running Word in Safe Mode, which seemed to work. No crashes in Safe Mode. So I look at the Add-ins, which is what I understand the Safe Mode check is meant for. I don't have any active COM add-ins, and the only things in the list are what is loaded on a fresh install (Date, Instant messaging contacts, measurement converter, telephone number).
I'm finding it hard to do my work with this issue. Any ideas?

Hi,
Does this issue only occur when dealing with individual files? Create a blank document, type some text, use Spelling & Grammar check, can Word work normally?

We can try to reset the user options and registry settings in Word. You can refer to How to reset user options and registry settings in Word for help. There's an easy fix in the article.
If You want fix by yourself, you can follow the steps in the article to modify registry settings in Word. Such as renaming this key of Word 2016: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word. After modifying the registry settings, you should reboot your PC, open your Word to check if it works.
Tip: This article contains information about how to modify the registry. Make sure to back up the registry before you modify it.

Thanks for the response. I spell checked a few existing files as well as starting a new blank doc and pasting text from a random website in, the problem occurred every time. To note, I also put the file I am editing on a USB an ran Word spell check on my wife's laptop, seems like no problem there, either. So it must be all on the program/settings on my end.
I will attempt the registry fixes you suggested, then report back.

I downloaded the registry fix tool from the page you linked to and ran it. That seemed to have fixed the problem. I spell checked a poorly written 13,000-word chapter with hundreds of errors needing fixes and did not crash. The registry fix-it tool found 1 error and fixed that, and everything appears to be running smoothly. Marked as answered.
Thank you very much!
