All services needed for operation of Workstation RRS feed

  • Question

  • It is about Windows XP Pro SP3 and using on it shares provided by other station in the local network.

That PC is not planned to provide own shares.

The second main goal is to keep that system as smooth as possible: low risk of faults, low security risks,...

That means all unneeded services shall be not running.

Network neighborhood window is not used at all.

The Workstation service seems to be responsible for the mentioned functionality delivery.

However, it also seems that several/some other services are critical for accessing shares provided

by other machines in lan. How to identify all such services? Is there any list available?

Please keep in mind that service like Server should stay disabled according to taken use case.

  • You can disable server service. You wont be able to share anything if this is disabled. For, others services please check http://ss64.com/nt/syntax-services.html

  • Yeah, it could be realized a long time ago that Server services is for providing the shares to other stations.

    Nothing more.

How about all services needed to use the shares provided by other stations?

The sites like http://ss64.com/nt/syntax-services.html do not unfortunately provide detailed enough

information - in many cases an unprecise generic description. It is hard to judge if particular service is relevant

    for SMB/CIFS client or not.

  • Please stop marking this thread as answered!!!!!!

From my point of view, the thread starters point of view, the mail number 2 in this thread

is definitely not answering the asked questions.

If you compare asked questions with given answers you will see the former

    are still unanswered!!!!!

Furthermore, my update from Wednesday, February 20, 2013 10:30 PM

was not made without any reason!!!!!
