Backup and Restore Secondary Site Server Using Windows Server Backup Feature RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I plan to deploy secondary sites due to hundred of clients on remote site and upward traffic concern from remote site. I also plan using distribution point role on it. For backup secondary site server, is it supported to use windows server backup feature with full backup mode? And also, using restore on windows server backup feature.

I also have read "Planning for Site Operations in Configuration Manager" http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712686.aspx and it states

Secondary sites: There is no backup and recovery support for secondary sites. You must reinstall the secondary site when it fails.

Then, is it really I only can use reinstall secondary site and there is no way to use windows server backup feature?

Thanks a lot for your help.

  • Your understanding is correct. Secondary Sites can only be recovered by reinstall, in ConfigMgr 2012 RTM.

But... There is light at the end of the tunnel...
Starting in ConfigMgr SP1, you can now recover a secondary site by using the Recover Secondary Site action from the Sites node in the Configuration Manager console. During the recovery, the secondary site files are installed on the destination computer and then the secondary site data is reinitialized with data from the primary site.

SP1 is scheduled to be released (GA) in Q1 2013...

  • Hi Ronni,

Thanks for your explanation. For Recover Secondary Site feature on SCCM SP1, does it mean recovery data still sent for primary site server? Will it support grabbing recovery data backed up somewhere at branch site where secondary site server is placed?

  • To my very limited knowledge on this specific topic, I would assume that the secondary site data can be reinitialized from the primary site server only. But what’s more important is that you don't have to redistribute all content to all DP's attached to the Secondary Site.
