Hyper-V 2016 Cluster - Duplicate MAC Address for Virtual Machines RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Team,

    Recently (3 months ago) I migrated from Hyper-V cluster 2012 R2 (3 Dell PE PowerEdge R730xd) to Hyper-V cluster 2016 (3 HPE ProLiant).

I started to notice some VMs are having duplicate MAC address for the virtual adapter.

As a work around, I move one of the VM with duplicate MAC address to the same Hyper-V host of the other VM, Hyper-V cluster will assign a new MAC address to the adapter on the moved VM.

The virtual machines are using the virtual adapter dynamic MAC address.

The issue never occurred in the Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster. We also have 2 other Hyper-V 2016 clusters at different locations that do not experienced the duplicate MAC address issue.

I do understand that each Hyper-V node has an intendant database of 256 MAC addresses that are assigned to the virtual adapter, which could create the MAC conflict.

SCVMM 2016 can be used as possible solution.

How can I avoid this issue without implementing SCVMM?

Thank you and your help is appreciated.

    Raed
