  • Question

  • I'm still kinda in the dark regarding the FIM 2010 licensing.

From the FAQ: http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/identitymanager/en/us/faq.aspx : FIM 2010 production licenses are priced at $15,000 per server and $18 per user CAL. A FIM 2010 external connector is available for $18,000 per server.

    From http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ilm2/thread/9e318508-6a7f-4cc7-9460-3952ea7d5518:

  • User CALs are required for each person who accesses FIM 2010
    • Users for whom the software issues or manages identity information (including digital certificates)
    • Admins accessing the FIM 2010 management capabilities

    1) Supose you only use the FIM MA DB to store users because you want to benefit codeless provisioining. So you do not use the portal to manage users, they cannot do SSPR, manage groups,.. Would you need the CALs then too?

    2) Supose you also use this to manage service accounts do they need a CAL too?

    3) Supose you got accounts which are there to test functionality, as in no real users associated with them, do they need a CAL?

    4) Supose you extend the schema and add a new object like a computer, would that need a CAL?

I'm just wondering where you can draw the line. Any further insights on this? Can I conclude that you need a CAL for each users interacting with the portal: either as an admin managing stuff in the Portal, through the SSPR "client", through the outlook add ins, as a user on the protal or with a custom client? And if your "identity/object" does not contact the FIM Portal/Service in any way, that no CAL is required?

Or am I just plain wrong?

    Any feedback is appreciated
