Hyper-v VHD mounting error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone ,

Am new to virtualization , I have a windows server 2012 hyper-v server, I had successfully created the VM with windows server 2008 R2 as per my client requirement. In that VM I want to attach a VHD for storage inside the VM.For that I had turned off the VM and I had attached the VHD ,in that it attached successfully but when I started the VM the VHD displays but not accessible for use , it is not able to format also hitting the error "this process cannot proceed at this time, another process is running". I had checked all the background process but no solution also I had tried VHDX but yet I did not able to access this disk in VM in hyper-V 2012 .

             please help !!!

Please try to creat a new VHD file on server 2012 hyper-v Local Drive then try to attach it and check the result .

In addition , If there is any Anti-Virus software installed please disable it .

If the issue persists , you can try to create a new VM attach a new VHD file to narrow it down .

  • It is not clear as to how you are going about the process.

However the normal process for creating a VM with additional drives would be as follows.

If you are creating a Generation 1 VM then your "C:" drive or first vhdx file would be attached using the first IDE. For performance reasons you will want to create a new VHDX and connect it to the SCSI controller.  Then when you boot up the VM you can initialize and format the drive from within the VM.

For a generation 2 VM every disk is connected to SCSI.

Always use VHDX unless you plan to move the VM to Azure.

  • Did you open disk management inside of the VM and scan for changes and bring the disk online?

Attaching a second virtual disk as a data disk is pretty straightforward.

Also, did you update the Integration Components within the VM after you installed the OS?

  • I had Run the Integration Components Services and I had also tried to Initialize disk inside the VM and I had got the Error that  "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"
